STORY

For aid workers in Sabah, Malaysia, getting food to the needy is not an easy task. This is especially true for those assigned to send supplies to the kampungs ("villages") in the district of Penampang during the Movement Control Order.

Eddi Sone Joikol leads his group trekking on foot through the state's heavily forested and hill terrain. They need to distribute the food over as wide an area as possible, reaching Kg Moyog, Kg Mongkusilad, Kg Koliasan, Kg Malapi, Kg Mompoit, Kg Kipandi, Kg Lombiding and Kg Tadong-adong. As vehicles can't reach the village, they must carry the heavy loads of rice, cooking oil, sugar, salt and wheat flour on their backs. The villagers’ homes are high on the hillside, and recent rain has made the ground slippery and dangerous.

Eddi and his team use a traditional basked called a "wakid" made of bamboo, rattan bark and wood, often used by villagers to carry fruit, firewood, vegetables and paddy stalks.

With the Movement Control Order, many of those living in far-flung villages have not been able to travel to town for supplies.
