Engagement in sports is vital for promoting both mental and physical health, while also fostering inclusive and vibrant communities. Yet, in today’s modern society, physical inactivity, obesity, and non-communicable diseases are on the rise globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 3.2 million deaths each year are linked to insufficient physical activity. In Malaysia, nearly half the population is overweight or obese, and the Ministry of Health has reported significant increases in lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Clearly, sports must become a bigger part of everyday life for Malaysians.
The proposed solution is the creation of a network of sustainable community sports hubs, driven by a new public-private entity, the Suka Sukan Trust. The Trust would establish safe, efficient, and community-centered sports facilities across Malaysia, ensuring they meet the needs of diverse communities.
Key elements of the proposal include:
The Trust will raise and manage funds from government, corporations, and donors, with a Board of Trustees overseeing financial management and the construction or revitalisation of hubs.
Operators will be selected through a tender process and will participate in site selection, hub design, and community engagement.
The Board of Trustees will include representatives from KBS, former national athletes, business leaders, and community leaders, and will be managed by professionals with strong financial and legal expertise.
Operators will pay a one-time management fee, while 40% of surplus profits will be redirected to the Trust to support capital expenditure and daily operations.
Operators will oversee day-to-day management of the hubs and their satellite venues, with the ability to manage multiple hubs.
The Trust will manage an online booking platform, MYSports, which will be free to users. As the platform grows, it can generate revenue through digital advertisements.
Retail spaces within the hubs will also be leased to operators as an additional revenue stream.
This initiative seeks to unlock the full potential of Malaysia’s youth as drivers of national progress, aligning with the aspirations of Vision 2020. By embedding sports as an inclusive lifestyle for all Malaysians—across age, gender, and ethnicity—the programme aims to cultivate a healthier, more united Sporting Nation. With a dual focus on youth development and widespread sports participation, Malaysia can build a generation of capable leaders while fostering a vibrant society rooted in active living and shared national purpose.
