Dokter Peduli Foundation (doctorSHARE) is a registered non-profit organisation dedicated to delivering medical care and humanitarian aid to underserved communities across Indonesia’s 17,000 islands. For many living in remote areas, reaching a hospital can take days—so doctorSHARE brings the hospital to them through its innovative floating hospitals.
Founded in 2009 by Dr. Lie Dharmawan, whose own childhood struggles to access healthcare inspired his mission, doctorSHARE is driven by the belief that no one should be denied medical care because of where they live. As Dr. Lie says
As a doctor, refrain from exploiting the poor. While they may afford the medical fees, they might return home in tears, lacking funds for basic sustenance.
“
To strengthen and scale this life-saving work, a team of senior leaders from Allianz, facilitated by the Global Institute for Tomorrow (GIFT), partnered with doctorSHARE to develop a Vision 2030 and a targeted development model for its floating hospitals. The vision aims to expand the fleet from 2 to 10 vessels and increase patient coverage fourfold by 2030.
The proposed model is built on four key pillars:
Funding Strategies – Diversifying income through donations, grants, corporate partnerships, and a recommended Social Impact Fund.
Strategic Partnerships – Collaborating with shipbuilders, renewable energy providers, universities, and hospitals to boost efficiency and cut costs.
Organisational Development – Strengthening branding, attracting and retaining medical volunteers, and creating a future-proof operating model.
Policy Advocacy – Promoting incentives for donations, support for healthcare professionals in remote areas, and streamlined permits for foreign specialists.
Indonesia has made progress in healthcare but continues to face pressing challenges—high maternal and infant mortality rates, widespread stunting, and being the world’s second-largest contributor to tuberculosis cases. By improving access to sustainable, quality healthcare in isolated communities, doctorSHARE’s model addresses these gaps and strengthens the nation’s health system.
