Business Plan | Global Leaders Programme 2025

Indonesia’s Arts Industry: Drawing on the Private Sector to Expand the Investment Canvas

Indonesia’s artistic traditions are among the richest in the world, yet many risk becoming frozen in time. What’s needed now are systems that allow culture to grow, adapt, and stay relevant to younger generations.

Indonesia possesses one of the world’s most diverse and historically rich artistic heritages, shaped by hundreds of ethnic groups across thousands of islands, each contributing unique rituals, crafts, music, and performing arts. The modern challenge lies in providing adequate support for Indonesia’s diverse arts and cultural traditions so that they can continue to develop, adapt, and connect with young generations while competing with the growing influence of global media. Without renewed engagement and a developed arts and cultural ecosystem, traditional arts risk becoming static heritage, accelerating long-term cultural erosion.

Developed under the Global Leaders Programme in 2025, Kultur Kita is a proposed private limited liability company (LLC) that will establish university-based cultural hubs across Indonesia to unite artists, students, and communities in a living ecosystem. The hubs design and host programmes, workshops, and performances. They connect artists with audiences, provide platforms for student involvement, and deliver cultural learning experiences. A purpose-built digital platform, U-Connect, will connect all the key players to enable participation, discovery, and support across all cultural activities.

Kultur Kita’s business model will be supported by multiple diversified flows of income. An endowment fund (provided by an existing donation-based foundation, Kelola Foundation, and managed externally) will provide start-up capital and long-term sustainability via stable annual investment returns. Other revenue streams include donations and sponsorships, merchandise sales, ticket sales, F&B, and digital engagement.

Through a phased expansion, Kultur Kita will first pilot its model in Java, with plans for national expansion from Year 2. Projected to break even by Year 4, Kultur Kita offers a replicable blueprint for revitalising Indonesian arts and culture that is low-cost, scalable, and rooted in local cultural realities.
