Mukhtar Malik Hussain

Former HSBC Group General Manager and Regional Head of Belt & Road Initiative for HSBC Asia Pacific

Mukhtar Malik Hussain retired from HSBC in 2021 following a 39-year career with HSBC. He served in multiple senior roles across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, rising from a graduate trainee to a Group General Manager. During this period, he was at the forefront of driving and delivering both regional and global initiatives. This culminated in his appointment as Head of the Belt and Road Initiative in Hong Kong and also in charge of Business Corridors.

Mukhtar began his career in London as a merchant banker and moved to the Middle East in 1993 to establish a wholesale banking platform for HSBC in the region. It was the first international institution to do so, driving market innovation across multiple asset classes. He rose to become Deputy Chairman of HSBC Middle East and also served as a Board Member of HSBC Saudi Arabia. In 2010, he was appointed to lead HSBC’s operations in Malaysia. During his tenure as CEO, the bank underwent substantial change and challenges, which were successfully navigated. He served as both CEO and Chairman/Deputy Chair of the Board and led the establishment of HSBC Amanah in Malaysia. He also served as Chairman of HSBC Singapore during a period of strategic change and investment.

Mukhtar served in London as Global Co-Head for Banking and Head of Principal Investments during the GFC, navigating the challenges it brought. Since his retirement in 2021, Mukhtar has established Montague Advisory Partners, a strategic advisory practice focused on Asia-Middle East trade and investment flows. He currently serves on the ASB Board of Governors and is Chair of the Deans Presidential Advisory Committee.
