Last month’s edition was a reflection on 2022. Now, to open this month’s edition, we start with an examination of one of last year’s most significant events: the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. In particular, we take a closer look at Morocco, which took centre stage with its performance. But what Moroccan sub-cultures were on display during the world cup, and how do they differ from other African and Arab cultures? This question is answered by the first article.
Second, we move to Indonesia, which is the new Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). As the largest country in ASEAN, Indonesia has the potential to create lasting change – but it has its fair share of challenges, between Myanmar, the South China Sea, and questions surrounding intra-ASEAN cooperation.
Next, an explainer piece looks at the Hindu Kush region, and in particular how climate change is influencing meltwater levels, which has impacts on water supply and energy generation in both China and India.
The penultimate article focuses on China, and how a segment of its NGOs are leading the way in tackling the root issues of economic activity that lead to climate change.
Finally, we close with an article from Cambodia, which provides an architect’s perspective on how “placemaking” can be used to improve the quality of life and economic potential of Siem Reap, a city which is rapidly modernising.
We hope you enjoy this month’s selection of some of the most interesting commentary from around the region.
